JE Jon Ericson Public Seen by 11

Below are my minutes of the meeting. Please let me know you have any corrections, additions or questions.

Jan 21, 2025 | Foundation BAC Kick-off meeting

Attendees:

  • Nicola Tuveri - Tampere University (Academics)

  • Paul Dale - Oracle (Committers)

  • Dmitry Belyavsky - Red Hat (Distributions)

  • Randall Becker (Individuals)

  • Tim Chevalier - NetApp (Large Businesses)

  • Foundation Staff: Matt Caswell Tomas Mraz Amy Parker Richard Levitte Jon Ericson

Notes

  • (Matt) BAC Kick-off slides

    • Jon is the liaison and contact point between the BAC and the Foundation.
  • Randall suggested that he shift into the Small Business seat (currently vacant) so that we can fill it with the idea that filling the individual seat will be easier.

  • (Nicola) Will the BAC use the OpenSSL forums

    • (Matt) The intention is to use those forums and make the discussion (on the whole) public. The BAC discussion section is public.
  •  (Randall) What is the software used for the forums?

  • (Randall) What software should we use to run meetings?

    • (Matt) OpenSSL’s approach is low-tech:

      • Text file in GitHub for minutes.
      • Project board in GitHub.
    • (Matt) If you want to use something else, let us know.

    • (Tomas) Public meeting minutes should be published.

  • (Randall) What sort of minutes should we take?

    • (Matt) It’s up to the BAC itself.
    • (Pauli) Prefer intent-based minutes.
    • (Randall) Roberts-rules style minutes are easier on the person who takes minutes. [Editor: Yep! These minutes are closer to a transcript and it's easy to miss things.]
    • (Nicola) Recording + minutes hybrid.
    • (Tim and Randall) Let’s try something!
    • (Nicola) Whole stack (such as Meetecho) might be overkill.
    • (Matt) +1 for hybrid.
  • (Matt) Meeting frequency

    • (Nicola) Rotate times so that everyone is equally uncomfortable. ;-)
    • (Matt) The BAC timezones are in the US, Australia and Europe.
    • (Pauli) Any two timezones work, but the three together is not great.
    • (Pauli) Use chat whenever possible. Less frequent meetings.
    • (Randall) Chat as a queue that might feed into a meeting.
    • (Matt) Anticipate the BAC will need to meet on a call from time to time.
    • (Nicola) Potentially short monthly meetings with most discussion in chat.
    • (Matt) Making a decision can be hard to do in chat, but easier in a meeting.
    • (Tomas) Loomio does make async decisions easier.
  • (Randall) Is there a queue?

    • (Matt) Nothing yet, but we might after our F2F meetings over the the next two weeks.
    • (Nicola) Academia would like to provide input to roadmap and priorities. Collect feedback from our communities.
    • (Matt) We don’t have a prioritization mechanism at the moment.
  • (Randall) Not sure how to reach the various communities

    • (Matt) Loomio would be a good option
    • (Jon) I will set up training on how to best use the platform.

Action items

  • Session on how to use Loomio (Jon)

  • Foundation staff sets an initial queue in the coming weeks.

Hi @Jon Ericson !

Thanks for this!

I liked that the corporation made a blog post about the kickoff meeting of their BAC (and a thread here on OpenSSL-communities )

Would it be a good idea to turn your minutes in a similar post as well?
